The Three Minute Thesis competition allows master’s and doctoral students to present, in English, their research topic in simple terms to a lay audience . Each student has three minutes to give a clear, concise, and convincing summary on their research project.

Institution-wide contest

The National 3MT Competition has been cancelled for 2021 and replaced with a non-competitive showcase of 3MT videos produced across Canada.

Rules

Participants must distil the complexities of their research project into an interesting and accessible summary, using a single static slide and no accessories.

• Students will have 180 seconds to present their master’s or doctoral research subject.
• No accessories other than notes are allowed: no laser pointers, no clothing accessories used specifically for the presentation, etc.
• Students are allowed a visual aid, which is strongly recommended but not required.
• Students are allowed to use one single, non-animated PowerPoint slide to illustrate their presentation. The text appearing on the slide must be in English.
• No audio or video aids are allowed.

Conditions of eligibility

The conditions of eligibility are as follows:

• be registered in an active master’s or doctorate program (with thesis).
• competitors who are eligible on the day of their first presentation in a local competition will remain eligible for the 3MT Canada competition, regardless of any subsequent changes to their status.
