Two scientific breakthroughs by the teams of professors Roberto Morandotti and José Azaña of Centre Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications, INRS, have made it onto the Optical Society’s list of the 30 most exciting new discoveries in optics and photonics in 2016.

This list of scientific advances from around the world is published in a special edition of Optics & Photonics News. The discoveries were peer-selected through a very competitive process. Under these circumstances, having two breakthroughs into the top 30 is remarkable enough, but it’s even more impressive that both were produced by the same INRS lab!

Scientific advance in quantum optics by Professor Morandotti’s
The discovery in the field of optics instruments by Professor Azaña’s group paves the way for novel applications in fields such as high-precision metrology and high-speed analysis. The scientific advance in quantum optics by Professor Morandotti’s team makes it possible to generate a wide range of complex quantum states for optical communication, with applications in information processing and spectroscopy.
Both these breakthroughs were produced by INRS’s ultra-high-speed light manipulation laboratory (LULMAN), headed up by professors Morandotti and Azaña, who are also Fellows of the Optical Society.
Congratulations to these two researchers in photonics for this historic first for INRS!
