Fiorenzo Vetrone<\/a>, a chemist and physicist at the INRS \u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications Research Centre, has been named to the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) in recognition of his key contribution to the field of rare earth elements. The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists is Canada\u2019s first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership. Recognition by the RSC is the highest honour an individual active in the arts, social sciences or sciences can receive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Vetrone is a scientist recognized internationally for his innovative research in the field of rare earth-doped nanoparticles (rare earths are a group of metals in the periodic table). His team studies nanoparticles whose optical properties are very useful for all sorts of applications in biomedicine. These nanoparticles are used to develop new tools for the simultaneous early detection and treatment of diseases such as cancer. Professor Vetrone\u2019s work has led to a number of important discoveries in understanding the optical properties of nanomaterials, their production and applications, including nanomedicine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe discovery of the unknown is what inspires me. I like conducting fundamental research and especially finding ways to link the laboratory to real-world applications that can contribute to the common good.\u201d <\/p>Professor Vetrone. <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
