Quantum technologies could provide a revolutionary solution to the problem of secure communication, especially in relation to sending personal, banking, and governmental data online. <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/roberto-morandotti\/\">Roberto Morandotti<\/a>, a professor at the National Institute of Scientific Research (INRS), researches this issue. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/index_fra.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada<\/a> (NSERC) has awarded Professor Morandotti more than $800,000 to fund two research projects in quantum communication and in quantum cryptography. The first project also benefits from a $215,157 contribution from <a href=\"https:\/\/promptinnov.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prompt<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economie.gouv.qc.ca\/accueil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minist\u00e8re de l&#8217;\u00c9conomie et de l&#8217;Innovation du Qu\u00e9bec<\/a>(MEI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Quantum Communication<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Morandotti is interested in quantum communications networks made up of local nodes. These connection points generate photons that are used to transport information.&nbsp; The quantum properties of these light particles allow them to travel long distances along an optical fiber between local nodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two central obstacles slow the development of this promising technology: the loss of photons and the lack of robust interconnects between local nodes. Professor Morandotti will collaborate with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.optoecomponents.com\/accueil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">OptoElectronic Components Inc<\/a> (OEC), an industry partner, to overcome these obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, they will develop robust, low-loss interconnects between integrated waveguide-based photonic chips and standard optical fibers. Professor Morandotti made it clear that <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThis is a crucial step toward the commercialization of fiber-based quantum secure communication that will help Canada maintain its position as a leading player in the field.\u201d<\/p><cite>Roberto Morandotti, scientific head of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/research-facilities\/find-a-research-facilitie\/ultrahigh-speed-light-manipulation-laboratory\/\">Ultrahigh Speed Light Manipulation Laboratory<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Teams of university and industry researchers from Britain will also collaborate by simultaneously developing photonic chips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Quantum Cryptography<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Quantum cryptography is another promising approach in the field of secure communication. Quantum cryptography relies on photons\u2019 quantum characteristics. Indeed, quantum key distribution prevents information photons from being intercepted or copied, which allows communication to be secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using on-chip photonic structures integrated with fiber optic networks offers several advantages. However, these devices often require a compromise between cost and performance. With his quantum cryptography project, Professor Morandotti seeks to improve these photonic platforms with OEC\u2019s support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University and industry teams from the UK are also collaborating on this project. These partners will create the source architecture for the development of miniature atomic clocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese projects will benefit Canada by training highly qualified personnel in the interdisciplinary field of integrated photonics and device design,\u201d Professor Morandotti concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>About the Projects<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first project, titled, \u201cConnectorizing Integrated Quantum Photonics Devices,\u201d received a $400,000 grant through NSERC\u2019s call for joint Canada-UK projects on quantum technology, as well as the contribution from Prompt and the MEI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second project, titled \u201cDevelopment of Highly Efficient, Portable, and Fiber-Integrated Photonic Platforms Based on Micro-Resonator,\u201d also received $400,000 from the same program.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>INRS team receives a combined
