A toxicology research will help uncover the effects of plastics on important biological systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nanoplastics\u2014tiny plastic particles invisible to the naked eye\u2014may exert an effect on nervous, immune, and reproductive systems of humans. To further explore this issue, Professor Daniel G. Cyr<\/a> of Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) has received funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada<\/a>\u2019s (NSERC) and Environment and Climate Change Canada<\/a>\u2019s (ECCC) Plastics science for a cleaner future<\/a> funding opportunity. The study will be among the first to address this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The health impacts of products used to make plastic, such as phthalates, bisphenol, and polystyrene, have previously been studied. However, few toxicological studies have assessed the risk of exposure to nanoplastics. These tiny pieces of plastic can be found everywhere in the environment, including in food and drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The effects of inflammation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This research will allow Professor Cyr and research teams from INRS, Canadian and Brazilian universities, Health Canada, and Environment and Climate Change Canada to assess how these contaminants affect the body\u2019s inflammatory response. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIncreased inflammation is linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, imbalanced immune responses, and altered fertility. Unlike chemicals emanating from plastics which are rapidly metabolized, plastic fragments could have long-term consequences.\u201d<\/p>Daniel G. Cyr, specialist in toxicology, and cell and molecular biology<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Inflammation affects the proteins responsible for the integrity of critical protective barriers of several biological systems. For example, the blood-brain barrier, prevents contaminants in the blood from reaching cells within the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe proposed multidisciplinary approach will allow us to assess the risks and determine the causes and consequences of inflammation on different physiological systems,\u201d said Professor Cyr. \u201cWe will then be able to formulate hypotheses regarding the mechanisms of action of nanoplastics.\u201d In addition to the effects of plastics, the research will provide a better understanding of the consequences of inflammation on various biological systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An international study<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Over the next four years, Daniel Cyr will collaborate with scientists from Canada and Brazil. At INRS, professors Krista Heinonen<\/a>, Simona St\u00e4ger<\/a>, Albert Descoteaux<\/a>, Alain Lamarre<\/a>, and St\u00e9phane Lefran\u00e7ois<\/a> are involved in the research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientists from McMaster University<\/a>, the University of Ottawa<\/a>, Health Canada<\/a>, and Environment and Climate Change Canada<\/a> will also contribute their expertise. Brazilian reproductive toxicology experts from Universidade Estadual Paulista<\/a> (UNESP) in S\u00e3o Paulo State and Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-\u00c1rido<\/a> in Mossor\u00f3 will study transgenerational effects of plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group is currently recruiting undergraduate and graduate students to work in Canada and Brazil starting this summer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
