Surfactants are synthesized from petroleum and are the main active ingredient in most soaps, detergents, and shampoos. Biosurfactants, produced by bacteria, are safer and can replace synthetic surfactants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhamnolipid molecules are some of the safest surfactants known and are particularly attractive, thanks to their biodegradability, minimal toxicity, and amenability to be produced from industrial waste. But there\u2019s a problem. They are made using <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa,<\/em> a pathogenic bacterium harmful to humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIf we want to fully gain the benefits of rhamnolipids, we need to grow these pathogenic bacteria on a huge scale. And because that\u2019s a health risk, the industry is looking for alternatives.\u201d <\/p><cite>Charles Gauthier, specialist in chemistry of carbohydrates and natural products<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The molecules produced by these bacteria are usually mixed with other compounds or virulence factors, making them trickier to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address the problem, the research team identified molecules that resemble rhamnolipids in <em>Pantoea ananatis<\/em>, a non-pathogenic bacterium. The team was then able to chemically synthesize these molecules, called ananatosides, in the laboratory, raising the possibility that they could be produced on a larger scale than using bacteria. The industry is already showing interest in these promising new biosurfactants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>A look at the structure <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new molecule comes in two different forms, A and B. Ananatoside A structure is described as closed, while B is open. The molecule A is closed in on itself to form a loop. The process that closes the loop is called lactonization, and it has also been achieved with rhamnolipids to create new molecules.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team has shown that the lactonized form has a large impact on the biological action of the molecules. It minimizes the surface-active properties of rhamnolipids and renders them toxic. Now the researchers want to characterize further new biosurfactants and make the molecules more stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>An interdisciplinary team<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>INRS professor <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/eric-deziel\/\">\u00c9ric D\u00e9ziel<\/a> helped with the research as an expert on biosurfactants. His team produced and isolated ananatosides produced naturally from the bacteria <em>Pantoea.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayri Alejandra D\u00ecaz De Rienzo, a lecturer at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ljmu.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Liverpool John Moores University<\/a> in England, also took part as an INRS guest professor. Her expertise in the fermentation and downstream processing of biosurfactants helped the team identify the surface-active properties of these new biosurfactants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maude Cloutier, a PhD student and recipient of a <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/actualites\/deux-etudiants-de-linrs-laureats-dune-bourse-vanier\/\">Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship<\/a>, and Marie-Jo\u00eblle Pr\u00e9vost, a recipient of a summer scholarship from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/index_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada<\/a> (NSERC), aided the team with their chemical synthesis work in the laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the study<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The article &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2021\/SC\/D1SC01146D#!divAbstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Total synthesis, isolation, surfactant properties, and biological evaluation of ananatosides and related macrodilactone-containing rhamnolipids<\/a>&#8220;, by Maude Cloutier, Marie-Jo\u00eblle Pr\u00e9vost, Serge Lavoie, Thomas Feroldi, Marianne Piochon, Marie-Christine Groleau, Jean Legault, Sandra Villaume, J\u00e9r\u00f4me Crouzet, St\u00e9phan Dorey, Mayri Alejandra D\u00ecaz De Rienzo, Eric D\u00e9ziel and Charles Gauthier, was published May 4 in the journal Chemical Science.
