{"id":45188,"date":"2012-12-06T16:24:14","date_gmt":"2012-12-06T21:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/?p=45188"},"modified":"2021-02-04T16:24:36","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T21:24:36","slug":"pulverized-rocks-used-to-strip-co2-from-large-emitting-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/news\/pulverized-rocks-used-to-strip-co2-from-large-emitting-plants\/","title":{"rendered":"Pulverized rocks used to strip CO2 from large emitting plants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.723), 20px);px\"><strong>Researchers in Quebec are developing a process that would see steel, coal and cement plants as well as oil and gas facilities remove most of the carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) from their emissions through chemical reactions with various types of crushed rocks in the stacks. &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is adapting and improving the process by which CO<sub>2 <\/sub>reacts with different minerals to form carbonates, a benign but valuable by-product that can then be sold to other commercial operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lead investigator Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/guy-mercier\/\">Guy Mercier<\/a>, of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), says he and his team are developing an economically attractive process that could easily be integrated into existing facilities and use simple and abundant rocks, waste concrete or tailings from mines in Quebec. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmc-nce.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carbon Management Canada<\/a> (CMC), a federal Network of Centres of Excellence that supports research to reduce CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions in the fossil energy industry and other large stationary emitters, is providing Mercier and his team $300,000 over two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou take the waste material, the rock, concrete or mine tailings, and crush it to make a powder and then you send that powder up the chimney with the gas,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/guy-mercier\">Mercier<\/a>. \u201cThe resulting chemical reaction removes 80 per cent of the CO<sub>2<\/sub>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I<\/strong>t also forms carbonate byproducts that can be sold to a variety of different industries for use as a refractory material or as an alcaline agent in wastewater treatment. \u201cThis will allow companies to profit while sequestering CO<sub>2<\/sub>, says Mercier. \u201cThey can create new jobs instead of creating pollution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a lower cost, low pressure, low temperature technology that doesn\u2019t require capturing purified CO2,\u201d Mercier says.\u00a0 \u201cThere are a lot of engineering challenges in this but we are well on our way to achieving success.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mercier is working with an international team of researchers from INRS, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucalgary.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Calgary<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unimelb.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">University of Melbourne<\/a>. The project is also being undertaken with industrial partners <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holcim.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Holcim Canada<\/a>, a building materials and construction company, and <a href=\"http:\/\/sigdt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">SIGMA DEVTECH<\/a>, a consulting company for startups. The research team will be reacting various magnesium and calcium rocks available in mine tailings mines with the gaseous emissions (containing CO<sub>2<\/sub>) of a Holcim cement plant with the participation of the cement plant staff in a chemical reactor (a plant in itself).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its 2012 round of funding, CMC is awarding $3.75 million to Canadian researchers working on 8 different projects.
