Close to 500 cultural, social, economic, academic and political decision-makers came together today for the Montr\u00e9al, m\u00e9tropole universitaire<\/em> forum<\/a>. Organized by the city’s nine universities in collaboration with the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal<\/a>, this event was meant to add to the debate surrounding the Sommet sur l’enseignement sup\u00e9rieur<\/em><\/a>. This was the first time that the nine Montr\u00e9al universities organized, jointly, such an event.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our universities are part of Montr\u00e9al’s DNA. They contribute a great deal to its prosperity, international reputation and cultural vitality. Today’s forum has allowed leaders from different sectors of the Montr\u00e9al community to share their expectations and show their commitment to the city’s universities. However, these institutions are also concerned that Montr\u00e9al may lose its status as a university metropolis and that they may no longer be getting the support they need,” explained Louise Roy<\/a>, Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Directors of Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al<\/a> and co-spokesperson for the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Although people often forget this, Montr\u00e9al is the university capital of Canada. Nearly two thirds of all university students in Qu\u00e9bec go to school here, and Montr\u00e9al receives the largest share of the country’s research funding. We cannot take this strength for granted. We must preserve these assets. Without strong universities, we will lose out on innovation, talent, a highly qualified and competitive labour force, and scientific discoveries,” stressed Michel Leblanc<\/a>, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal<\/a> and co-spokesperson for the forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The city’s future depends on strong, well-supported universities that provide high-quality teaching and research\u2014in other words universities of the 21st<\/sup> century. We hope that today’s discussions will be considered during the Sommet sur l’enseignement sup\u00e9rieur<\/em>,” concluded both co-spokespeople for the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 184,000 students are enrolled at a Montr\u00e9al university, a number that represents 65% of all Qu\u00e9bec university students. Out of this number, more than 25,000 are international students. Montr\u00e9al universities award over 43,000 degrees each year, which gives the city the largest pool of graduates in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To close the forum, the nine leaders of Montr\u00e9al’s university institutions thanked the participants for their support. They also made a commitment to keep this dialogue open with the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montr\u00e9al’s nine universities include the \u00c9cole de technologie sup\u00e9rieure<\/a>, \u00c9cole nationale d’administration publique<\/a>, Polytechnique Montr\u00e9al<\/a>, HEC Montr\u00e9al<\/a>, Institut national de la recherche scientifique<\/a>,\u00a0Concordia University<\/a>, Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al<\/a>, Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al<\/a>, and McGill University<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
