{"id":43489,"date":"2013-09-23T17:57:16","date_gmt":"2013-09-23T21:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/?p=43489"},"modified":"2021-01-25T17:57:42","modified_gmt":"2021-01-25T22:57:42","slug":"the-role-of-mayor-and-fighting-islamophobia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/news\/the-role-of-mayor-and-fighting-islamophobia\/","title":{"rendered":"The Role of Mayor and Fighting Islamophobia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.723), 20px);px\"><strong>Two professors from the <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/urbanisation-culture-societe-research-centre\/\">Urbanisation Culture Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Research Centre at INRS<\/a> received an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/funding-financement\/programs-programmes\/insight_development_grants-subventions_de_developpement_savoir-eng.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Insight Development Grant<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/home-accueil-eng.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada<\/a> (SSHRC). The grant will enable them to examine research questions in more depth and explore new ideas, theoretical approaches, and methods. Grant recipients were Jean-Pierre Collin, who studies how urban development projects redefine the role of mayors in large urban centres, and Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/denise-helly\/\">Denise Helly<\/a>, who takes an innovative approach to examining the social status of Muslim Canadians by studying their films and videos. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>The role of mayor in a large urban centre<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The mayor\u2019s role, urban development, and the dynamics of large urban centres are the three main themes of Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/jean-pierre-collin\" class=\"broken_link\">Collin<\/a>\u2019s research project aimed at improving our understanding of the political dynamics of North America\u2019s large cities. To study the role of mayors in urban planning management, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meso.ucs.dev.inrs.ca\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M\u00e9tropolisation et Soci\u00e9t\u00e9<\/a> (M\u00e9So) research team will conduct a survey in the Montreal Urban Community, which drew up a metropolitan land use and development plan in 2012. The research project, combining urban studies, geography, economics, and political science, will examine the process of metropolitanization and its impacts on municipal democracy as well the nature and extent of cooperation among mayors, government departments, and civil society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Collaborators<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/sandra-breux\/\">Sandra Breux<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/pierre-j-hamel\/\">Pierre J. Hamel<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/claire-poitras\/\">Claire Poitras<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/gilles-senecal\/\">Gilles S\u00e9n\u00e9cal<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/urbanisation-culture-societe-research-centre\/\">INRS Urbanisation Culture Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Research Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>A war of images<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/denise-helly\">Denise Helly<\/a> studies films and videos produced by Canadian Muslims to counter the negative, and false, image of Islam since September 2001. Her research on these Muslims\u2019 struggle against Islamophobia is one of the few projects on this subject in Canada. Her team will make an inventory of all online films and videos and YouTube posts through which Muslim Canadians try to gain social recognition or explain Islam to non-Muslims or Muslims with whom they disagree. An analysis of their content will shed light on how the authors counter key stereotypes such as the inferior status of Muslim women, blind religious fervor, the role of religion in the public sphere, and the outdated, monolithic representation of Islam.
