{"id":43472,"date":"2013-10-29T17:40:43","date_gmt":"2013-10-29T21:40:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/?p=43472"},"modified":"2021-01-25T17:41:42","modified_gmt":"2021-01-25T22:41:42","slug":"materials-science-to-build-a-better-future-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/news\/materials-science-to-build-a-better-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Materials science to build a better future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A number of researchers from INRS&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/energie-materiaux-telecommunications-research-centre\/\">\u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications Research Centre<\/a>&nbsp;shared their innovative ideas at the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.matscitech.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Materials Science and Technology<\/a>&nbsp;(MS&amp;T) conference. Organized by American businesses\u2014mostly from the metallurgical sector\u2014the event took place in Montreal for the first time, from October 27 to 31, 2013. Recently opened to advanced materials, an INRS area of expertise, the event featured 24 sessions organized by INRS professors and involved nearly 70 experts from 14 countries (Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2013 conference explored \u201cShaping the Future with Technological Breakthroughs in Metallurgy and Materials.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/federico-rosei\/\">Federico Rosei<\/a>, Director of INRS&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/energie-materiaux-telecommunications-research-centre\/\">\u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications Research Centre<\/a>, and six other professors discussed some rather futuristic avenues of research, from nanoelectric devices to medical and space applications for advanced materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to its unique positioning regarding research on advanced materials, photonics, and sustainable energy, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/research-centres\/energie-materiaux-telecommunications-research-centre\">\u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications Research Centre<\/a> was able to put together a team of elite researchers\u2014some of the best in the world. They discussed innovative processes for the synthesis, characterization, and application of new materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A hot topic these days, solar energy has been the focus of many sessions, from the basics to more technical aspects of research in the field. For example, professor Majed Chergui of \u00c9cole polytechnique f\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne discussed charge transfer mechanisms in materials of interest for photovoltaics using a type of X-ray spectroscopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically developed with industry in mind, MS&amp;T is a place for industrial and academic scientists to share their findings and ideas. In this vein, one of the guests of INRS, Jessica Topple of Chipworks, a Canadian company, took the opportunity to reveal certain development approaches resulting from advanced industrial research in the area of laser beam characterization techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Distinguished guests<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the guests at the conference, one researcher in particular was sure to draw a lot of attention: Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chem.utoronto.ca\/ppl\/faculty_profile.php?id=52\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">John Polany i<\/a>of Toronto University, who has been doing research for more than 60 years and won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/chemistry\/laureates\/1986\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry<\/a>. Since the start of the 21st century, he has focused his research on molecular motion on thin surfaces. He took part in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.programmaster.org\/PM\/PM.nsf\/ViewSessionSheets?OpenAgent&amp;ParentUNID=C97C44053E9FD2FC85257B55006A4639\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a session<\/a>&nbsp;on nanostructures in thin layers and their self-assembly, organized by <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/federico-rosei\/\">Federico Rosei<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/mohamed-chaker\/\">Mohamed Chaker<\/a>, and Alberto Vomiero, all from INRS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many notable guests took part in the discussions, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rpi.edu\/dept\/cie\/faculty_siegel.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Richard Siegel<\/a>\u2014a pioneer in nanotechnology\u2014and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qm.phy.cam.ac.uk\/scott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">James F. Scott<\/a>&nbsp;of Cambridge University\u2014a well-known scientist, often referred to as the \u201cfather of integrated ferroelectrics,\u201d who was instrumental in the development of FRAM, a non-volatile memory. Professors Andreas Ruediger and<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/alain-pignolet\/\"> Alain Pignolet<\/a> of INRS were excited to have such a prominent researcher as a guest for their session on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.programmaster.org\/PM\/PM.nsf\/ViewSessionSheets?OpenAgent&amp;ParentUNID=1E52779CBA3E3EF785257B4E00114461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">magnetoelectric and multiferroic nanostructures<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to explaining innovative techniques for preparing and synthesizing materials, attendees shared their ideas on potential new applications, notably in the field of medicine. <a href=\"http:\/\/spectroscopygroup.com\/users\/daniel-jaque\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daniel Jaque<\/a>&nbsp;of the Autonomous University of Madrid <a href=\"http:\/\/www.programmaster.org\/PM\/PM.nsf\/ViewSessionSheets?OpenAgent&amp;ParentUNID=E4AA67D23F63C47285257B5E005D8402\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will describe a therapeutic approach<\/a>&nbsp;that involves using light-activated nanoparticles to kill unwanted cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>A special experience for a Ph.D. student<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortune sometimes smiles on students, and that is exactly what happened to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emt.dev.inrs.ca\/actualites\/mischa-nicklaus-se-distingue-a-la-conference-nanoquebec-2012\">Mischa Nicklaus<\/a>, a Ph.D. student in energy and material science under <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/andreas-peter-ruediger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andreas Ruediger<\/a>&nbsp;at INRS. Nicklaus got to present some of the results of his research project before giving the floor to two leading global experts in his field, <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.phys.chemie.uni-muenchen.de\/hartschuh\/index.php?id=42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Achim Hartschuh<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npl.co.uk\/people\/deb-roy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Debdulal Roy<\/a>\u2014a brilliant debut for this talented student. The next day, he defended his thesis, the results of which were already being described as spectacular by jury members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was an exciting week for the materials industry.
