For little more than a month now, Sharif Sadaf<\/a> has been a professor at the \u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications Research Centre. The specialist in nanostructured semiconductors tells us why he chose to become a professor at INRS.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharif Sadaf has travelled widely since his undergraduate studies at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), the country\u2019s most prestigious university. After a master\u2019s degree in materials science and engineering from Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), South Korea, he earned a doctorate in electrical engineering from McGill University, Montreal. In order to continue his research, he then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, at the National Research Council (NRC), Ottawa and just before his arrival at INRS, at the University of Notre-Dame, Indiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nanoscience and cleanroom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What caught him at INRS? The ultramodern infrastructure of nanostructures and femtoscience he learned about while studying at McGill. \u201cThe manufacture and development of high-quality nanostructured semiconductors and nanoscale devices critically require state-of-the-art cleanroom (facility for semiconductor processing) infrastructure and sophisticated tools. Very few universities in North America have this kind of infrastructure,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Provide solutions to real-life problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Contributing to society has always been an important part of Sharif Sadaf\u2019s work. It was therefore obvious for him to continue his research and to become a professor in the field of semiconductors to train young researchers and transmit his passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSemiconductors are everywhere around us in our computers, phones, smart energy, healthcare, transportation, and more. As a teacher, I want to show my students what they can achieve and how to apply their knowledge.”<\/p>Sharif Sadaf<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a researcher, I want to invent cost-effective new materials and energy-efficient devices and provide solutions to real-life problems,\u201d says Professor Sadaf, who has been fascinated by semiconductors since he was a freshman at BUET.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
