{"id":27869,"date":"2017-02-28T14:45:28","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T19:45:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/?p=27869"},"modified":"2020-10-06T15:14:07","modified_gmt":"2020-10-06T19:14:07","slug":"nmr-spectroscopy-platform-to-target-the-development-of-new-therapeutic-agents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/news\/nmr-spectroscopy-platform-to-target-the-development-of-new-therapeutic-agents\/","title":{"rendered":"NMR spectroscopy platform to target the development of new therapeutic agents"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.482), 18px);px\"><strong>Implementation of a new nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy platform will provide professors <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/nicolas-doucet\/\">Nicolas Doucet<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/steven-laplante\/\">Steven LaPlante<\/a> of Armand-Frappier Sant\u00e9 Biotechnologie Research Centre with a powerful new tool for conducting an ambitious research program aimed at identifying new therapeutic molecules.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/research-facilities\/find-a-research-facilitie\/nuclear-magnetic-resonance-spectroscopy-laboratory\/\">platform<\/a>, funded in part by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovation.ca\/about\/press-release\/canada-invests-cutting-edge-infrastructure-researchers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Canadian Foundation for Innovation<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovation.ca\/about\/press-release\/canadian-researchers-receive-more-51-million-funding-government-canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John R. Evans Leaders Fund<\/a> and the Government of Quebec, will enable the two researchers to explore the role of atomic-scale molecular motions in protein and enzyme families involved in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), diabetes, asthma, HIV, auto-immune disease, and cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"252\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2020\/08\/fci-02-17-profs-en.jpg\" alt=\"NMR spectroscopy platform to target the development of new therapeutic agents\" class=\"wp-image-18380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/fci-02-17-profs-en.jpg 640w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/fci-02-17-profs-en-300x118.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Pooling their parallel expertise in protein NMR and drug discovery, professors Doucet and LaPlante will have access to a 600 megahertz NMR spectrometer with high throughput screening capabilities to characterize biomolecular interactions between proteins and their ligands. The knowledge gained will be crucial to fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD), a new pharmaceutical approach aimed at developing targeted and more effective drugs that cause fewer side effects.&nbsp; &nbsp; This new research capability has the potential to revolutionize drug development practices and to provide new impetus to the pharmaceutical industry in Quebec and across Canada.
