The study looks at the role education levels play in intergenerational income mobility in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Actualite-lien-entre-education-et-mobilite-intergenerationnelle-2-inrs.jpg\" alt=\"Lien entre \u00e9ducation et mobilit\u00e9 interg\u00e9n\u00e9rationnelle\" class=\"wp-image-26809\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Actualite-lien-entre-education-et-mobilite-intergenerationnelle-2-inrs.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Actualite-lien-entre-education-et-mobilite-intergenerationnelle-2-inrs-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Actualite-lien-entre-education-et-mobilite-intergenerationnelle-2-inrs-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Actualite-lien-entre-education-et-mobilite-intergenerationnelle-2-inrs-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Most studies available on the subject present results based on national or regional income mobility, which can be used to make geographic and historical comparisons. \u201cThe underlying mechanisms at play in the relationship between the income of parents and the income of their children, including their education levels and job characteristics, hasn\u2019t been studied much in Canada,\u201d explained Professor St-Denis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To measure the effects of education on intergenerational mobility in Canada, the two researchers looked at the data from Statistics Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/eng\/survey\/household\/5144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Longitudinal and International Study of Adults (LISA)<\/a>, which covers the period from 1982 to 2014. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cOur study shows that in Canada, a child\u2019s education level explains 40.5% to 50.1% of the correlation between a child\u2019s income once they reach adulthood and their parent\u2019s income. The results also point to the existence of differentiation mechanisms that operate throughout the working lives of people with similar levels of education. \u201cIntergenerational mobility partly results from the different characteristics in a child\u2019s environment, from their cumulative and complementary effects. It also results from the time, financial resources, and social capital that parents with a higher income are more likely to invest in their children\u2019s education,\u201d said Professor St-Denis, who recently joined INRS\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/urbanisation-culture-societe-research-centre\/\">Urbanisation Culture Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Research Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the income of people living in a society is only marginally dependent on their parents\u2019 income, that society is said to have a high degree of intergenerational mobility. In other words, the context in which children grow and evolve does not depend solely on their parents\u2019 economic situation. Access to education, for example, could depend not on parents\u2019 ability to pay for it, but on the child\u2019s interest in pursuing their studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inversely, when the income of individuals in adulthood is, on average, similar to that of their parents, inequalities are reproduced to a much greater degree from one generation to the next.
