More affordable and effective than existing types, the accelerator will be able to produce a new generation of compact light sources for life science and medical applications. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/NEWS_INRS-researchers-actively-involved-in-compact-particle-accelerator-development_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"689\" height=\"415\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The project led by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usask.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Saskatchewan<\/a>&nbsp;professor&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lightsource.ca\/contacts\/details.php?id=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Emil Hallin<\/a>&nbsp;and conducted in partnership with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">University of Alberta<\/a>&nbsp;researchers has received a grant from the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.innovation.ca\/en\/OurFunds\/CFIFunds\/LeadingEdgeandNewInitiativesFunds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Canada Foundation for Innovation Leading Edge and New Initiatives Funds<\/a>&nbsp;($543,440) and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mesrst.gouv.qc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s Minist\u00e8re de l\u2019Enseignement sup\u00e9rieur, de la Recherche, de la Science et de la Technologie<\/a>&nbsp;($183,052).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project builds on the ultra-short laser application research work conducted at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/research-facilities\/find-a-research-facility\/advanced-laser-light-source-laboratory\/\">Advanced Laser Light Source\u00a0(ALLS)<\/a>, led by Professor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/francois-legare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fran\u00e7ois L\u00e9gar\u00e9<\/a>, and at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usask.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Saskatchewan<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lightsource.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Light Source<\/a>\u00a0(CLS). These two major infrastructures (laser and synchrotron) use photons to study materials in very different ways with wavelengths ranging from infrared to X-ray. By combining these two complementary approaches at INRS, Canadian researchers will for the first time have access to intense, ultra-short, and coherent light sources for life sciences, manufacturing, environmental, and earth sciences applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the devices and equipment required for this particle accelerator will be installed at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/research-facilities\/find-a-research-facility\/advanced-laser-light-source-laboratory\/\">Energy Materials Telecommunications Research Centre\u2019s Advanced Laser Light Source<\/a>&nbsp;in Varennes and used in conjunction with the 200 TW laser currently in operation at the centre. INRS researchers have already successfully produced electron beams with novel properties using the laser wakefield acceleration technique, which is based on the use of ultra-intense and ultra-short laser pulses.
