{"id":18584,"date":"2014-05-13T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-13T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/simplifying-an-ultrafast-laser-offers-better-control\/"},"modified":"2020-12-10T10:30:59","modified_gmt":"2020-12-10T15:30:59","slug":"simplifying-an-ultrafast-laser-offers-better-control","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/news\/simplifying-an-ultrafast-laser-offers-better-control\/","title":{"rendered":"Simplifying an ultrafast laser offers better control"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Going back to the drawing board to find a way to overcome the technical limitations of their laser, a team led by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/francois-legare\/\">Fran\u00e7ois L\u00e9gar\u00e9<\/a>, professor at the INRS \u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications Research Centre, developed a new concept offering a simpler laser design, control over new parameters, and excellent performance potential. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Called \u201cfrequency domain optical parametric amplification\u201d (FOPA), the concept supersedes traditional time domain amplification schemes that have been the linchpin of ultrafast laser science for 20 years. The new concept is explained in detail in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ncomms\/2014\/140507\/ncomms4643\/full\/ncomms4643.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an open access article<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em>Nature Communications.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/NEWS_Simplifying-an-ultrafast-laser-offers-better-control_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"742\" height=\"446\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For researchers, capturing images of a moving electron is the holy grail of molecular imaging. But in their efforts to generate a light pulse that is sufficiently short and powerful to capture such an image, researchers have been held back by the fundamental limitations and unsatisfactory performance of lasers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cOur goal is to capture images of a chemical reaction using high spatial and temporal resolution. I want to shoot a video where you can actually see the atoms dancing in a chemical reaction.\u201d<\/p><cite>Explained Fran\u00e7ois L\u00e9gar\u00e9, speaking at the TEDxConcordia event<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Amplifying laser pulses in the frequency domain rather than the time domain also overcomes certain technical constraints, among them the ability to access multiple different frequencies simultaneously and control them independently. In addition, higher light pulse energy can be achieved with the new concept. \u201cOur approach holds promise for high-power, broad spectrum, few-cycle laser sources,\u201d said the young researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the proof of concept presented in the&nbsp;<em>Nature Communications&nbsp;<\/em>article, Professor L\u00e9gar\u00e9\u2019s team demonstrated that FOPA generates pulses comparable to lasers using time domain amplification in the given conditions: 1.5 mJ, 1.8 microns, 12 fs duration corresponding to 2 optical cycles. Research associate and lead author Bruno Schmidt points out that not only does the FOPA approach open up access to parameters that could not previously be controlled, it also eliminates many complex assembly components. \u201cThe logic underpinning this concept could be applied to other types of applications,\u201d he added, \u201cso we believe it will allow us to look at nonlinear optics in a whole new light.\u201d Optimistic and ambitious, Bruno Schmidt plans to market the innovations stemming from his work, even founding his own company,&nbsp;<em>few-cycle&nbsp;<\/em>Inc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>About this publication<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The article entitled&nbsp;\u201c<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ncomms\/2014\/140507\/ncomms4643\/full\/ncomms4643.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Frequency domain optical parametric amplification<\/em><\/a>\u201d<em>appeared in the Nature Communications journal on May 7, 2014.
