The team used a femtosecond laser source to shoot a molecular movie of how an acetylene molecule turns into vinylidene. An&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ncomms\/2014\/140718\/ncomms5422\/full\/ncomms5422.htmll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a>&nbsp;presenting the advancement was recently published in the scientific journal&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ncomms\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Nature Communications<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/NEWS_Another-advancement-in-imaging-from-INRS-professor-Francois-Legares-team_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"834\" height=\"502\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe approach we developed combines multiphoton ionization and Coulomb explosion imaging. With the significantly improved resolution of the image, we were able to reveal previously unknown details of this isomerization process and clarify the dynamics of proton migration. This form of imaging uses a compact laser source and is a simple option for studying the ultrafast molecular dynamics of other small organic molecules.\u201d <\/p><cite>Heide Ibrahim, Banting&nbsp;postdoctoral fellow and primary author of the article<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This isomerization process has already been observed using large equipment like free electron lasers with very energetic photons. However, the techniques most commonly employed to track nuclear rearrangement in a molecule were largely insensitive to the subtle and irregular changes that occur during a chemical reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The experiments were designed by postdoctoral fellow Heide Ibrahim and professor&nbsp;Fran\u00e7ois L\u00e9gar\u00e9&nbsp;and conducted at INRS\u2019s Advanced Laser Light Source (ALLS) laboratory (<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/research-facilities\/find-a-research-facility\/advanced-laser-light-source-laboratory\/\">Laboratoire de sources femtosecondes<\/a>) in collaboration with the University of Waterloo, the National Research Council of Canada, and Universit\u00e9 de Sherbrooke. The results showed for the first time that multiple oscillations can occur between the two isomers acetylene and vinylidene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About this publication<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The article entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ncomms\/2014\/140718\/ncomms5422\/full\/ncomms5422.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tabletop imaging of structural evolutions in chemical reactions demonstrated for the acetylene cation<\/a>\u201d appeared in&nbsp;<em>Nature Communications&nbsp;<\/em>on July 18, 2014. The research was conducted by Heide Ibrahim, Samuel Beaulieu, Bruno E. Schmidt, Nicolas Thir\u00e9, Eric Bisson, Vincent Wanie, Mathieu Gigu\u00e8re, Jean-Claude Kieffer, and Fran\u00e7ois L\u00e9gar\u00e9 of INRS, Benji Wales and Joseph Sanderson of the University of Waterloo, Emmanuel P. Fowe and Andr\u00e9 D. Brandrauk of Universit\u00e9 de Sherbrooke, Michael Spanner and Michael S. Schuurman of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), and Christoph T.
