It is the first time that this phenomenon has been observed in the coronavirus family, which is responsible for one-third of common colds and is also suspected of being associated with the development or aggravation of neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer\u2019s disease, and encephalitis. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plospathogens\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.ppat.1005261\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discovery<\/a>, which has just been published in the prestigious journal\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plospathogens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>PLoS Pathogens<\/em><\/a>, was achieved in the Laboratory of Neuroimmunovirology at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/armand-frappier-sante-biotechnologie-research-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">INRS\u2013Institut Armand-Frappier<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In analyzing more than 60 human respiratory tract samples from patients infected by the human coronavirus, researchers discovered an important mutation in the S protein that modifies the virus capacity to infect nerve cells. The mutation is associated with the degree of viral virulence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Actualite-percee-monde-coronavirus-realisee-chercheurs-inrs.jpg\" alt=\"Perc\u00e9e dans le monde des coronavirus r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par des chercheurs de l\u2019INRS\" class=\"wp-image-25013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Actualite-percee-monde-coronavirus-realisee-chercheurs-inrs.jpg 640w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Actualite-percee-monde-coronavirus-realisee-chercheurs-inrs-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe noticed that the protein mutation did not affect the virus\u2019s ability to infect the central nervous system, but that the mutated virus was less pathogenic and neurovirulent, probably as a result of changes in the way it spread from neuron to neuron due to the action of cellular proteins known as proprotein convertases, which alter the structure of the viral protein,\u201d explained lead researcher\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/la-recherche\/professeurs\/pierre-talbot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Pierre Talbot<\/a>. \u201cUnder these conditions, the coronavirus could more easily cause a persistent central nervous system infection. In virology, this phenomenon is known to trigger certain slow-developing neurological conditions or aggravate neurological diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These results make it possible to better understand how persistent coronavirus infections take hold and may help prevent the development of associated neurological diseases in humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>About the article<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>This research was conducted by first co-authors Alain Le Coupanec, doctoral candidate, and Marc Desforges, research associate, and by Mathieu Meessen-Pinard, doctoral candidate, and Mathieu Dub\u00e9, postdoctoral fellow, all from the INRS Laboratory of Neuroimmunovirology; Robert Day, professor at Universit\u00e9 de Sherbrooke; Nabil Seidah, professor at IRCM; and Pierre Talbot, professor and director of the Laboratoiy of Neuroimmunovirology at INRS\u2013Institut Armand-Frappier, and corresponding author. The results of their work have been published in the journal PLoS Pathogens under the title \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plospathogens\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.ppat.1005261\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cleavage of a neuroinvasive human respiratory virus spike glycoprotein by proprotein convertases modulates neurovirulence and virus spread within the central nervous system<\/a>\u201d (DOI: 10.1371\/journal.ppat.1005261).
