{"id":18486,"date":"2016-01-12T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/patent-for-a-system-that-removes-micropolluants-from-wastewater\/"},"modified":"2020-11-19T14:02:38","modified_gmt":"2020-11-19T19:02:38","slug":"patent-for-a-system-that-removes-micropolluants-from-wastewater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/news\/patent-for-a-system-that-removes-micropolluants-from-wastewater\/","title":{"rendered":"Patent for a system that removes micropolluants from wastewater"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A US patent was recently awarded jointly to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.criq.qc.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre de recherche industrielle du Qu\u00e9bec (CRIQ<\/a>) and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/homepage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institut national de recherche scientifique (INRS)<\/a>&nbsp;for a system and a process that remove emerging micropollutants from industrial wastewater.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/NEWS_Patent-for-a-system-that-removes-micropolluants-from-wastewater_01.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In preliminary studies the patented membrane bioreactor system eliminated 99% of bisphenol-A (BPA) and other compounds in heavily contaminated wastewater. BPA, which is used in the manufacture of plastics, is a micropollutant thought to disrupt various physiological mechanisms. The system is designed for installation at factory outlets to treat wastewater at the source and can also be incorporated into wastewater treatment plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other efforts ongoing to treat hospital wastewater<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Further work conducted by INRS and CRIQ are underway to confirm that this system can also treat water contaminated by six classes of drugs: antidepressants, antibiotics, analgesics, hormones, anticonvulsants, and chemotherapy products. Its installation at hospital outlets would prevent these pollutants from dispersing into the environment, where they could have adverse effects and ultimately end up in the food chain. Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and Centre d\u2019expertise en analyse environnementale du Qu\u00e9bec also contributed to implementation of this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince emerging micropollutants are not entirely eliminated by processes in existing wastewater treatment plants, CRIQ and its partners in 2008 began developing solutions to allow their removal before they reach municipal wastewater collection systems. Results indicate this is an especially promising approach toward protecting the environment from micropollutants, which carry real risks for human and animal health\u201d, notes Gerardo Buelna, research officer at CRIQ.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe presence of micropollutants in effluents carries risks that justify research efforts.
