Professor Tiago H. Falk<\/a> of INRS\u2019s Energie Mat\u00e9riaux Telecommunications Research Centre has won the 2016 Young Investigator Award<\/a>  presented by Sigma Xi<\/a> in recognition of his research excellence in physical sciences and engineering. He is the first Canadian scientist to win this award.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At his MuSAE (Multimedia\/Multimodal Signal Analysis and Enhancement) Lab, professor Falk and his team conduct research at the cross-roads of multimedia communications and biomedical engineering.  This research has led to assistive technology for people with disabilities as well as new tools to help diagnose Alzheimer\u2019s disease, detect autism in infants, and identify serious symptoms of depression. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The quality and originality of professor Falk\u2019s work had previously earned him two distinctions in 2015: the Early Career Achievement Award<\/a> from the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society and the Rayonnement Bell<\/a> award. He is also a member of the Global Young Academy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Falk will receive the Young Investigator Award at Sigma Xi\u2019s annual meeting this November in Atlanta. At the meeting, he will give a talk entitled \u201cA Tale of Two Disciplines: How Multimedia and Biomedical Technologies Can Come Together for the Betterment of Human Kind\u201d in which he will discuss the challenges posed by his interdisciplinary research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
