Furthermore, social acceptability and active involvement of the aboriginal communities are key to developing renewable energy in the North. These were two main takeaways that emerged from the workshop on defining energy solutions for northern regions held at INRS on December 9, 2016, in the wake of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/actualites\/stimulate-development-sustainable-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">international research cooperation agreement between Quebec and Iceland.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/NEWS_Toward-energy-solutions-for-northern-regions_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"686\" height=\"346\"\/><figcaption><em><em>Jos\u00e9 Acu\u00f1a Sequra (KTH Royal Institute of Technology \u00e0 Stockholm), Ren\u00e9 Therrien (Universit\u00e9 Laval), Louis Gosselin (Universit\u00e9 Laval), F\u00e9lix-Antoine Comeau (Institut national de la recherche scientifique), \u00d3li Gr\u00e9tar Bl\u00f6ndal Sveinsson (Landsvirkjun), Jasmin Raymond (Institut national de la recherche scientifique), Ren\u00e9 Roy (Ouranos), Ga\u00e9tan Lantagne (Institut de recherche d&#8217;Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec), Hakim Nesreddine (Institut de recherche d&#8217;Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec), Juliet Ann Newson (Universit\u00e9 de Reykjavik), Ari Kristinn J\u00f3nsson (Universit\u00e9 de Reykjavik), Sigr\u00fan Nanna Karlsd\u00f3ttir (Universit\u00e9 d\u2019Islande).<\/em><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop, which brought together INRS (which initiated the agreement), Universit\u00e9 Laval, Reykjavik University, University of Iceland, Landsvirkjun (Iceland\u2019s national power company), Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s Research Institute (IREQ), and Ouranos Consortium, was an opportunity for university partners and energy producers to discuss and define collaborative projects aimed at replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy, not only to preserve the environment but also to reduce price volatility. Participants highlighted the importance of improving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Short-, medium-, and long-term energy demand forecasts for northern regions<\/li><li>Our understanding of weather and climate change in order to adapt energy systems to the realities of northern regions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By pooling their complementary expertise in shallow geothermal energy, mobile energy system development, geothermal system engineering, and new materials research, partnership members want to provide private and public decision makers with valuable scientific and technical insight. To succeed, they plan to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Develop capacity-building projects on common issues relating to integrated energy systems<\/li><li>Incorporate bilateral activities into ongoing research projects and to establish a dual degree agreement between universities in Quebec and Iceland<\/li><li>Promote student enrolment in summer sessions at participating institutions and to foster faculty mobility and personnel exchanges with industrial partners<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Geothermal symposium<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing the right materials for geothermal operations remains a constant challenge, which is why cooperation and knowledge sharing between universities, industry, and government is crucial to the growth of geothermal energy. That was the general consensus following the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/evenements\/Geothermal-symposium-INRS-2016-Program.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">geothermal symposium<\/a>\u00a0held on December 8, 2016, at INRS\u2019s Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event gave researchers from Iceland, Sweden, and Quebec an opportunity to review the state of knowledge in this multidisciplinary field. They concluded that:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The scarcity of equilibrium temperature measurements in Quebec leads to considerable uncertainty when analyzing regional geothermal potential<\/li><li>Deepening our knowledge of available geothermal resources is critical to dealing with the growth of the drilling industry, which may affect the energy market<\/li><li>Geothermal energy can be used anywhere, regardless of local geological conditions<\/li><li>There is a lack of data on northern Quebec, and an easier access to geothermal data is essential<\/li><li>Demonstration projects are required to validate assumptions regarding low temperature heat pumps<\/li><li>Research on new materials is boosting the performance and reducing the cost of geothermal systems<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIceland\u2019s and Sweden\u2019s experience with geothermal energy in the Arctic Circle is paving the way for Quebec,\u201d asserts INRS professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/jasmin-raymond\/\">Jasmin Raymond<\/a>, holder of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/research-centres\/ete\/northern-geothermal-potential-research-chair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Northern Geothermal Potential Research Chair<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emphasis should be on the energy needs of companies and communities rather than locally available resources.
