Quantum computing is one step closer to becoming a reality thanks to the team\u2019s breakthrough in optical physics. \u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Using an optical frequency comb, researchers were able to simultaneously generate multiphoton entangled quantum bit (qubit) states\u2014a historic first. In doing so, they showed that it is possible to generate a wide range of complex quantum states for optical communication in signal processing and spectroscopy.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The discovery is also compatible with current electronics. This represents a significant advantage, spurring Professor Morandotti to predict in the <em>Qu\u00e9bec Science<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quebecscience.qc.ca\/10-decouvertes-2016\/3-Physique-Lumiere-sur-ordi-du-futur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article <\/a>that the computer of tomorrow will be a hybrid that combines the characteristics of present day computers and those of quantum computers, with their vastly superior computing power.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/actualites\/giant-step-forward-generating-optical-qubits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">breakthrough <\/a>was made in INRS\u2019s ultra high speed light manipulation laboratory (LULMAN) and has been met with keen interest from the international scientific community. It also garnered the attention of prestigious media such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/04\/160427150627.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Science Daily<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/search.sciencemag.org\/?q=morandotti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Science<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osa-opn.org\/home\/articles\/volume_27\/december_2016\/features\/optics_in_2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Optics and Photonics News<\/em><\/a> (the \u201cOptics in 2016\u201d special issue), to name a few. \u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Researchers Christian Reimer, Michael Kues, Piotr Roztocki, Benjamin Wetzel, Fabio Grazioso, Brent E. Little, Sai T. Chu, Tudor Johnston, Yaron Bromberg, Lucia Caspani, David J. Moss, and Roberto Morandotti presented their results in the March 2016 issue of Science in an article entitled \u201cGeneration of multiphoton entangled quantum states by means of integrated frequency combs\u201d (DOI: 10.1126\/science.aad8532).<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><strong>2016 Discovery of the Year: People\u2019s Choice Award<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>The public is invited to vote on the 10 jury panel selections to name the biggest discovery of the year.
