However, the drilling required to install geothermal systems presents technological challenges that are undermining the development of this energy sector. With the new open laboratory for geothermal energy, professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/jasmin-raymond\/\">Jasmin Raymond<\/a>\u00a0of INRS Centre Eau Terre Environnement will have new experimental capabilities to investigate solutions that reduce dependence on fossil fuels.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/NEWS_INRS-acquires-new-open-laboratory-for-geothermal-energy_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32904\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/NEWS_INRS-acquires-new-open-laboratory-for-geothermal-energy_01.jpg 640w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/NEWS_INRS-acquires-new-open-laboratory-for-geothermal-energy_01-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded equally by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovation.ca\/awards\/john-r-evans-leaders-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)\u2019s John R. Evans Leaders Fund<\/a>\u00a0and the Qu\u00e9bec government for a total of $400,000, this new facility combines the techniques of infrared scanning and tomodensitometry, a first for a geothermal energy laboratory. Researchers will be able to characterize the thermal and hydraulic properties of rock samples and model the impact of subsurface heterogeneity on the performance of geothermal systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Raymond\u2019s team at the open laboratory for geothermal energy is seeking to better understand how groundwater flows and transfers heat so as to\u00a0:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>develop environments conducive to both shallow and deep geothermal systems,<\/li><li>improve the design of the underground components of these systems, and<\/li><li>develop new, more competitive technology.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cOur research will help identify geological environments with lower drilling costs for geothermal systems. This will make the Canadian geothermal energy industry more competitive in relation to fossil fuels.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><cite>Professor Raymond, who also holds the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/research-centres\/ete\/northern-geothermal-potential-research-chair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Northern Geothermal Potential Research Chair<\/a>.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The open laboratory for geothermal energy operates on the same principle as free software.
