The award comes with a $25,000 prize that will enable Professor van Grevenynghe to further his research into the development of new strategies for treating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The award recognizes the research excellence and creativity of young Canadian researchers working in health and biomedical sciences.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NEWS_Julien-van-Grevenynghe-receives-award-from-the-Banting-Research-Foundation_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32888\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NEWS_Julien-van-Grevenynghe-receives-award-from-the-Banting-Research-Foundation_01.jpg 640w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NEWS_Julien-van-Grevenynghe-receives-award-from-the-Banting-Research-Foundation_01-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><em>Professor Julien van Grevenynghe<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor van Grevenynghe is studying the role of autophagy in the immune response to HIV infection. Autophagy is recognized as an essential cellular defence system in eliminating certain viruses found in cells and may also play a role in \u201ctraining\u201d T cells, which are an integral part of the immune system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe goal of our research is to better understand the molecular mechanisms of immunity among infected subjects. These mechanisms naturally control viral replication and serve as an efficient defence system. Our results could be used to strengthen the immune system of patients who need antiretroviral therapy and to develop effective HIV vaccines, a goal that remains elusive despite constant efforts.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><cite>Professor van Grevenynghe, a specialist in immunology and virology who joined INRS in 2015.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 1925, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/bantingresearchfoundation.ca\/about\/what-we-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Banting Research Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;provides startup funding to support early-career researchers.
