Such parts are marked with serial numbers, for security and traceability purposes. The numbers may however be partially or completely erased, and although there are techniques for recovering them from metal parts, this is not the case for polymers. But that may be about to change. In an&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/ipdf\/10.1021\/acs.analchem.7b03069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">article&nbsp;<\/a>published in&nbsp;<em>Analytical Chemistry<\/em>, researchers have demonstrated the potential of a non-destructive method for making abraded serial numbers on polymers visible again.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"487\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/NEWS_A-new-advanced-forensics-tool_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32589\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/NEWS_A-new-advanced-forensics-tool_01.jpg 640w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/NEWS_A-new-advanced-forensics-tool_01-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u00e9dric Parisien, an INRS master\u2019s student in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/research-centres\/emt\/graduate-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">energy science and materials<\/a>, used Raman spectroscopy to reconstruct erased information from a sample of polycarbonate, a polymer that figures prominently in the manufacture of bulletproof products. The technique could be of great benefit to forensics, since it requires no pre-treatment and does not damage the sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe stamping technique used to engrave serial numbers creates deformations deep in the material. We used Raman spectroscopy to reveal those changes and get a kind of fingerprint for use in recovering erased images, without recourse to thermal, chemical, or other treatments.\u201d&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/andreas-peter-ruediger\/\">Andreas Ruediger<\/a>, professor and study coauthor.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Other studies are underway to test the reliability of this new method on various other polymers and materials such as ceramics, both for security applications and in quality control.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the publication<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acs.analchem.7b03069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Reconstruction of obliterated characters in polycarbonate through spectral imaging<\/a>,\u201d in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/journal\/ancham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Analytical Chemistry<\/a><\/em>, presents the research of C\u00e9dric Parisien, Gitanjali Kolhatkar, and Andreas Ruediger of INRS Centre \u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications and Frank Crispino and Andr\u00e9 Lajeunesse of the UQTR forensics research laboratory.
