How do we know if a school, factory or home is in a location suited to extracting the earth\u2019s natural heat\u2014a clean and renewable resource? This question usually goes unanswered, which puts a damper on growth in the industry. Tests are expensive. With no guarantee of finding enough potential to make their investment worthwhile, property owners may hesitate to move forward.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"471\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_01.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_01.png 640w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_01-300x221.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to ramp up knowledge-sharing and development, Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) has created the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/log.ete.dev.inrs.ca\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laboratoire ouvert de g\u00e9othermie (LOG)<\/a>. For Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/jasmin-raymond\/\">Jasmin Raymond<\/a>, the scientist in charge of the lab, geothermal energy is \u201cnot only good for the environment but also cost-effective, especially for buildings meant to be in use for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 10% of GHG emissions in Quebec come from residential and commercial properties that still use oil-burning furnaces. Upgrading those systems is part of the Quebec government\u2019s 2013\u20132020 Climate Change Action Plan. \u201cA shift to geothermal energy would have a big impact on our carbon footprint,\u201d says Professor Raymond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A lab open to all<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The LOG is not only home to the latest technology, but is also designed to be accessible to all, much like free software.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside partners can use the LOG equipment for free. They can come analyze their rock samples or even test innovative new materials for thermal conductivity and other geothermal properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_02.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30999\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_02.png 640w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_02-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In exchange, they agree to let their data become public in three years, through a database developed by the lab. \u201cOur long-term goal is to develop knowledge on the thermal and hydraulic properties of the rocks that are analyzed,\u201d explains Professor Raymond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"378\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31001\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_03.png 640w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_03-300x177.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He and his team are working with both the public and private sectors. For example, they have published maps of geothermal potential. One was used to assess the thermal conductivity of rocks near surface in the St. Lawrence lowlands. This invaluable information can facilitate the installation of geothermal heat pumps in target areas. Near surface geothermal potential generally seems higher to the north and east, as shown in this study conducted with SNC-Lavalin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study examined the potential of geothermal heat pumps using boreholes up to 150 metres deep. The LOG will also be useful for assessing geothermal resources from geological reservoirs three to five kilometres underground on either side of the St. Lawrence River. The lab is using rock samples from drilling cores taken during oil and gas exploration activities years ago to conduct experiments that promise a more renewable-energy future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Grand openning of LOG<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>INRS introduced the LOG during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inq.ulaval.ca\/en\/node\/34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Institut nordique du Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s third Science Day<\/a>, held at INRS on Wednesday, November 28, 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_04.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_04.png 640w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/NEWS_An-open-access-lab-to-explore-the-eco-friendly-furnace-beneath-our-feet_04-300x94.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The LOG was established with funding from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovation.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frqnt.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/accueil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Government of Quebec, and the Fonds de recherche du Qu\u00e9bec \u2014 Nature et technologies (FRQNT)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jasmin Raymond holds the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/english\/research-centres\/ete\/northern-geothermal-potential-research-chair\" class=\"broken_link\">Northern Geothermal Potential Research Chair<\/a>, which is funded by Institut nordique du Qu\u00e9bec and aims to adapt these technologies to the northern environment to encourage green energy development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Institut national de la recherche scientifique is the only institution in Quebec devoted exclusively to graduate-level research and training. The influence of its faculty and students extends around the world.
