During the annual convocation ceremony, Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) CEO Luc-Alain Giraldeau awarded an honorary doctorate to the Canadian physicist, a pioneer in the field of lasers and the third woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><strong><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/actualites-images\/Strickland-Donna-Web.jpg\" style=\"width: 640px; height: 426px;\"\/><\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size:12px !important;background:#f2f2f2;padding:10px;\">Photo credit : Universit\u00e9 de Waterloo<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Donna Strickland developed the chirped pulse amplification technique with French physicist G\u00e9rard Mourou in the early 1980s. Their innovation makes it possible to generate ultra-short, high-intensity laser pulses with applications in eye surgery, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, the environment, cellular imaging, and micromechanics, not to mention huge potential in basic research.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Right from the start, Dr. Strickland and Dr. Mourou worked closely with other dedicated scientists, including INRS professors Henri P\u00e9pin, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/jean-claude-kieffer\">Jean-Claude Kieffer<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/mohamed-chaker\">Mohamed Chaker<\/a>. Their close collaboration led to the development of laser facilities and a research program at the INRS Centre \u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications in Varennes.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Professor Strickland has taught at the University of Waterloo since 1997 and has over 90 publications to her name. She has made a vital contribution to laser technology and the advancement of physics.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cHer perseverance, her involvement in various organizations, and her steadfast determination to contribute to society through innovation make her an accomplished scientist, an outstanding collaborator, and a truly remarkable woman,\u201d said Luc-Alain Giraldeau. \u201cDonna Strickland inspires all our graduates and an entire generation of young women and scientists.
