The event drew some 400 guests, including members of the INRS community, dignitaries, and research partners. The evening was an opportunity to look back on 50 years of scientific contributions to Qu\u00e9bec society and to underscore the institute\u2019s unique role in the university ecosystem.\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cINRS was created as a research institute designed to serve the people of Qu\u00e9bec. Fulfilling this objective requires bold projects that transcend scientific disciplines. INRS founder Charles E.-Beaulieu joined Mr. Giraldeau on stage along with Armand Couture, chairman of the board for nearly 14 years, Alain Soucy, CEO from 1988 to 1998, and Daniel Coderre, CEO from 2009 to 2016, to recall the early days and share how they saw the institute\u2019s future during their time at the helm.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThere\u2019s something decidedly modern about it all. You tell researchers: Be empowered, reach out to your colleagues, be transdisciplinary. Beaulieu, Mr. Alain Soucy, Mr. Armand Couture, Mr. Daniel Coderre (currently, CEO of G\u00e9nome Qu\u00e9bec), and Mr. Luc-Alain Giraldeau. <\/strong>Photo credit: La\u00ebtitia Boudaud<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>Many awards and honours were presented at the event in recognition of the outstanding work done by INRS faculty members and students.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Prix Plan\u00e8te awards\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Prix Plan\u00e8te awards are handed out to INRS professors who have made important contributions to the development and dissemination of scientific knowledge and who have piloted innovative approaches to knowledge transfer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Professor <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/monique-bernier\">Monique Bernier,<\/a><\/strong> who has been at INRS since 1993, was awarded the prestigious 2019 Prix Plan\u00e8te in the Outstanding Research Career category in recognition of her long and illustrious career.<\/div>\n<div><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><strong><a href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/actualites-images\/Monique-Bernier-prix-planete2.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lightbox\" style=\"width: 640px; height: 427px;\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/actualites-images\/Monique-Bernier-prix-planete2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><strong>Professor Monique Bernier, recipient of the Prix Plan\u00e8te 2019 &#8211; Outstanding Research Career category. <\/strong>Photo credit: La\u00ebtitia Boudaud<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>Professor Bernier was the first woman to join the faculty of the Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre. Her research on radar remote sensing applications in hydrology and glaciology and the monitoring of climate change impacts on northern environments has led to the development of technologies used in James Bay hydroelectric projects and in predicting ice jam flooding.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>She received the Larry Morley Gold Medal from the Canadian Remote Sensing Society in recognition of her valuable contributions to the field.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Professors <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ete.dev.inrs.ca\/jasmin-raymond\">Jasmin Raymond <\/a><\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dev.inrs.ca\/federico-rosei\">Federico Rosei<\/a><\/strong> were awarded the 2019 Prix Plan\u00e8te in the categories of Outstanding Achievements in Research and Outstanding Achievements in Teaching, respectively.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>INRS 50th anniversary scholarship<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>INRS launched a graduate scholarship program as a student recruitment initiative to mark its 50th anniversary. Four students, one from each research centre, received a $10,000 scholarship to pursue their graduate studies at INRS.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n<li><strong>Mr. Clarence Hatton-Proulx<\/strong>, student, doctoral program in Urban Studies \u2013 Urbanisation Culture Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Research Centre<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mrs. Diane Rawach<\/strong>, student accepted into the doctoral program in Energy Science and Materials \u2013\u00a0 \u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications Research Centre<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mrs. Jessica Dozois<\/strong>, student, master\u2019s degree in Applied Microbiology \u2013 Armand-Frappier Sant\u00e9 Biotechnologie Research Centre<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mr. J\u00e9r\u00f4me Simon<\/strong>, student, doctoral program in Earth Sciences \u2013 Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u201cMy research in 180 seconds\u201d competition\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Martin Chenal<\/strong>, a PhD student in biology in Professor Fr\u00e9deric Veyrier&#8217;s laboratory at the Armand-Frappier Sant\u00e9 Biotechnologie Research Centre, made a name for himself by winning the audience and jury awards for his presentation entitled GspA: Un nouveau r\u00e9gulateur important de la comp\u00e9tence naturelle chez Neisseria meningitidis.
