The health of plants depends primarily on the micro-organisms that accompany them.<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>The team led by Professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/professors\/etienne-yergeau\/\">\u00c9tienne Yergeau<\/a>&nbsp;at INRS studies plant microbiota in view of promoting plant health and productivity.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2020\/02\/microbiote.png\" alt=\"Le microbiote au c\u0153ur de la sant\u00e9 v\u00e9g\u00e9tale\" class=\"wp-image-576\" width=\"826\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/microbiote.png 700w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/microbiote-300x143.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 826px) 100vw, 826px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlants interact with tens of thousands of organisms that are crucial to their health. They can\u2019t survive without their microbiota. This evolutionary relationship probably began when plants first colonized land,\u201d says Professor \u00c9tienne Yergeau, a specialist in microbial ecology at INRS in Laval, Quebec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>The Microbiota of the Future<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-9474 size-medium\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Yergeau_Etienne_076_web_balanced-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"\u00c9tienne Yergeau professeur en \u00e9cologie microbienne \u00e0 l\u2019Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS)\" class=\"wp-image-9474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Yergeau_Etienne_076_web_balanced-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Yergeau_Etienne_076_web_balanced-768x605.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Yergeau_Etienne_076_web_balanced.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Professor \u00c9tienne Yergeau<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Professeur Yergeau\u2019s goals is to make plants more resilient to stress induced by climate change. An adapted microbiota could help plants weather more frequent periods of drought. To test this hypothesis, the researcher is leading a project to identify and isolate micro-organisms responsible for adaptation to stress. Using the best micro-organisms identified, his team then reconstitutes the microbial community and tests plant resistance to stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Yergeau is also looking into excessive use of fertilizers that harm microbiota and alter plant nutrition, notably nitrogen nutrition in wheat. \u201cWe want to see how wheat might associate with micro-organisms that could help it recover nitrogen from the soil in order to reduce the use of fertilizers or boost their effectiveness,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microbiota may also have a role to play in reducing pesticide use. Micro-organisms help plants defend against insect pests. Some fungi and bacteria can kill insects, while others emit volatile compounds that can help repel them,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Enough Production to Meet Global Needs<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to keeping plants healthy, microbiota could promote plant growth and boost harvest quality. \u201cThis is very important, especially with the global population explosion. We\u2019re facing a production shortfall. We need to boost yields or ensure that plants can grow on lower-quality land to meet planetary demand for food,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Yergeau is convinced that plant microbiota holds the key to maintaining productivity in the face of climate change and reduced pesticide and fertilizer use.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The year 2020 has been declared the International Year of Plant Health by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
