Qingzhe Zhang, a PhD student in Professors&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/dongling-ma\/\"><strong>Dongling Ma<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u2019s and&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/mohamed-chaker\/\"><strong>Mohamed Chaker<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u2019s laboratories at the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS), has been awarded the&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frqnt.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/la-recherche\/la-recherche-en-vedette\/histoire?id=ajonks971579789181918&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Rel\u00e8ve \u00e9toile Louis-Berlinguet<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;in January 2020 from the&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frqnt.gouv.qc.ca\/accueil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Fonds de recherche du Qu\u00e9bec \u2014 Nature et technologies<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>(FRQNT).<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI am very excited about being awarded the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frqnt.gouv.qc.ca\/la-recherche\/la-recherche-en-vedette\/histoire?id=ajonks971579789181918&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rel\u00e8ve \u00e9toile Louis-Berlinguet<\/a>&nbsp;and the recognition that brings here in Quebec. This in turn has led to massive greenhouse gas emissions, environmental pollution and a growing energy crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo tackle these issues, we need to find some new energy sources: solar, wind or water. So, I started to look into solar!\u2019\u2019 says Qingzhe Zhang who has been working on the development of efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts, which are able to convert solar energy into hydrogen, a clean zero-emission fuel, via solar water splitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The photocatalyst synthesized in his work is based on a metal-free material, few-layer black phosphorus, which has been showing great promise in different applications, including photocatalysis, due to its unique optoelectronic properties. The metal-free, 2D-on-2D photocatalyst synthesized by combining BP and graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets protects BP from oxidation and leads to efficient and broadband activity as well as long-term stability in H2 evolution from solar water splitting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>But Qingzhe Zhang was ready to tackle that challenge!<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the guidance of his supervisors, he developed an innovative, \u201corganic ice\u201d-assisted exfoliation method, which leads to the high-yield fabrication of few-layer black phosphorus with largely reduced energy inputs and processing time. To stabilize black phosphorus, a 2D-on-2D strategy, ie. stacking 2D black phosphorus on 2D carbon nitride nanosheets, was adopted. The method exhibits high stability and photocatalytic activity in water splitting. This work opens a new path for a simple and scalable preparation, as well as stabilization of 2D black phosphorus. They applied for an international patent and are now looking for funding to increase production of this material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI am very pleased that Qingzhe, a brilliant and very hard-working student did innovative work in this highly exploratory research and largely contributed to the advance of this important area. I am very proud of him,\u201d says Professor Ma, who is the supervisor of Qingzhe Zhang. \u201cGreat challenges need to be addressed before black phosphorus can really become \u2018the next big thing\u2019. We have to face them; the project is a tough one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think this could bring significant environmental and economic benefit to society,\u201d says Qingzhe Zhang whose work promises a bright future for generating 2D materials and renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Qingzhe Zhang is also the recipient of a PhD degree scholarship from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinesescholarshipcouncil.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China Scholarship Council (CSC)<\/a>&nbsp;and a Doctoral Research Award from FRQNT.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is no doubt Qingzhe Zhang likes problem solving and is not afraid of challenges.
