Most Significant Career Research ContributionsCanada Research Chair (2005-2015): Two questions structured the various research projects of the Chair from a comparative perspective: 1) What is it in cities that participate in generating political action?, and 2) In what ways would the city create a new political space in the context of state restructuring processes? How do urban problems contribute to modify the role of the state in managing insecurity? Research on fear in cities tends to be restricted to fear of crime and to convey a negative image of (racialized, male) youth, whereas work on fear and politics rarely delves specifically on the impacts of urbanisation. A book synthesizing this decade of research will be published in 2016 with Polity Press. Epistemological and methodological innovation: I founded the Laboratoire Ville et ESPAces politiques (VESPA), where the Chair’s research takes shape in a spirit of methodological innovation in terms of qualitative data collection techniques, the use of multimedia tools, and analytical techniques. A number of my recent articles describe this: a) The practice of comparison: The text “Droit à la mobilité, droit à la citoyenneté? Pratiques de mobilité et action politique / Rights to mobility, rights to citizenship? Mobility practices and political action” (2011) develops the notion of “vernacular comparison” to understand how youth develop a sense of citizenship by comparing the various parts of the city through which they travel.b) The integration of mobility in research: The chapter “Reflections on urbanity as an object of study and a critical epistemology” (2010) synthesizes the basic elements of what I like to call an epistemology of urbanity. Rethinking the political process:My work has always explored the state-citizen relation in an urbanizing world. Earlier in my career, the paper “Questioning the use of ‘local democracy’ as a discursive strategy for political mobilization in Los Angeles, Montreal, and Toronto” published in the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (2003) and for which I won a prize, has been cited many times. It was based on the publication in 2000 of my master’s thesis. 4. Career Interruptions - Maternity leave from January 1-August 30, 2005 and from May 15,2012 to May 1, 2013. 5. Contributions to Training (2009-2016)Working with students is essential to my work. I currently supervise a large team, in addition to welcoming annually interns from the École nationale des travaux publics de l’État (ENTPE) in France for five months. It is important for me to adequately finance my students and to give them the opportunity to be trained in conducting research and learn how to publish their work. Working with students on research projects means, for me, that they have to take ownership of the project, feel that they can take initiatives in terms of publications, analysis, methodological design, etc. Participating in these funded projects is an excellent means to learn how the research world works, from the grant proposal to publications, including analysis and networking.Postdoctoral supervisionPh.D studentsM.A. studentsForeign interns (min. 5 months)410 (5 have graduated)9 (7 have graduated)12 "}
